Landscapes
“Photography is like exploring a new dimension, only I can go there but I can show you where I've been.”

Statement of intent
My chosen theme for my GCSE level photography exam is "Landscapes" and that will mean I will specifically be looking at different and changing landscapes to capture the contrasts. I have chosen this theme because I like how professionals can take landscape pictures and they have inspired me to take my own. I wanted to have a go because it will allow me to learn more about photography skills and techniques and it also lets me learn more about the camera settings and how to use the right setting for the right picture.
In order to produce a successful final portfolio of mages, I will research different landscapes examples and I will be having a look at lots of different photographers. The photographer I am going to start my research is Adam Burton. I really like his work because he has taken pictures of water and rocks and he has captured the movement by using an slow shutter speed. I really want to go out and try get the foggy effect myself and so I will need to go out on location to capture the same sort of images. I also intend to extend my knowledge by visiting exhibitions and museums and I hope to explore the theme using the internet. I intend to capture lots of different landscapes that will get me a high mark and I will also involve myself in lots of different Photo shoots.
Throughout this project I will use a variety of techniques with the camera settings such as going out at different times of the day to capture different light and I will also try changing my camera settings to see witch setting gives me the best picture. I will be keeping my camera on manual, I will also be checking the ISO and my shutter speed and adjust when needed. I will keep adjusting it still I get the perfect shot and once I have all my camera settings are all adjusted I should be able to get the pictures I want. I will refine my work further by using Photoshop I will be cutting out, using layers, using the magic tool to cut and paste.
I will explore and research the best settings to use when taking an landscape picture the things I hope learning in this project it the best setting to put your camera on when taking a landscape picture. I also hope to learn is how to capture everything in one shot I see my final out come spread out on 2 to 5 different pictures because I want to get more then 2 good pictures. My aim is to get 2 to 5 amazing outcomes that I can publish and put them into photo shop and edit them and make them stand out an unique for my research. I will be looking at street photographers first and then I will go on to looking at famous photography I will do this because I want to see the differences between street photographer and famous photographer and when I spot the different techniques they use I will spot what they have in common. I chose this theme because I want to learn more about it and also want to know how to take landscape pictures I also thought it will be good fun going out of town to capture theses kind of images to show that I made process I will take some pictures without no knowledge about landscapes then when i'm done researching and I know what to do I will take couple pictures and see the differences between the pictures where I had no knowledge and where I have knowledge.

Comment: You can see an light house that on a mountain and a path to get there you can also see the sun set and you can see the endless waves splashing on the rocks you can see the stormy clouds and the orange sky you can clearly see the light house because its white and everything around it is a dark colour plus there is an bright light that circles none stop you can clearly see the path to get there because that is white too and everything about is it an dark colour the waves that splashed against the rocks are white and the sea is blue and it create an good effect
content: I think the most prevalent aspect in this photo is the sun. The eye wonders of into the top left corner of the image because, it's the only illumination created - everything else is dull, but dull in a very daunting way. The lighthouse is also captured within this shot and as said by Davies himself, it was "the haunted lighthouse". It definitely gives of an eerie feeling when looking at it because the colours are just so dim, almost hellish because - even in the sky - you see orange and black with quite scary looking spirals of clouds. The picture is surrounded by the sea with little segments of highlights from the sun which gives off the illusion of the sea being on fire.
composition:The composition is very detailed and elaborate. There isn't any direction that you think is the main aspect because, first, you would think Davies wants to portray a more drastic emphasis to the sun, but then you look at the lighthouse, and you think that he wants to give a traumatizing feeling to it, and then you look to the sky and you feel you are in an outlandish atmosphere, so there's really no direction specifically. However, the organisation is almost as if at the front, there's something petrifying going on, something scary or mythical and then as you look back you see slight hope, a little light were it might have picturesque views.
connection:Looking at Davies' photo of his visions on the lighthouse, I really want mine to give of a slight impression, weather it be enjoyment or anguish. I want, not just the lighthouse, but as many images to give of a certain feeling to whoever might come across the picture. I will take pictures of different elements of the surroundings and try to understand the fact that I need to create an emotion within the picture.
comment:Overall, the picture is very dramatic, you get the overview of something perplexing going on. I appreciate the way Davies has used his sense of colour and camera to capture such a sinister scene. The panoramic view is excellent but, I wonder what it would have looked like if he had picked a specific part to zoom in on.
For my first ideas I am thinking about trying to gather a wide range of different landscapes so I can compare and contrast them. I would like to get mages of the sea, sky, trees and structures to inspire my final outcomes.
Composition:
In this picture by Adam Burton, I can see that he has used rule of thirds because the big rock in the foreground is not directly in the middle, but to left hand side which makes it stand out. The sky is also one third and the sea & rocks two thirds which makes the rocks and water look like they are coming towards you and very dramatic. There are lots of strong leading lines that lead our eyes to the bigger rock in the background like lighting is hard and it creates even more of a spooky effect on the fog.
Content:
Adam Burton used a long shutter speed to capture the smokey effect, he also used a tripod because if he didn't use a tripod the picture would have came out blurry. The smoky water effect in my opinion adds interest to the image because it makes it eye catching and animated. The blue water and the dark blue rocks is eye catching it gives it an scary effect and the foggy water will make people question if an fog machine has been used or its just like that. He has a clear structure to the image, using foreground, middle ground and Distance, which makes the rocks at the front standout and adds scale as the image looks really deep. The sea has an vanishing point when it reaches the rocks and the horizon and there are strong leading lines created by the rocks which helps to draw your eye in. Adam Burton has taken the image at eye level which makes you feel that you could almost reach out and touch the water. It also adds to the dramatic effect as you are so close to the moving water.
comment:
There is a contrast from the the sea to the sky because it makes it look like a mirror yet it feels different with the colour and style. Overall there is a blue tint to the image which makes it look soft and fits in well with the smoky water effect. The image in my opinion is quite monochrome which makes it a little dull but also effective. The weakness of this picture I think that it is to blue and it needs other colours in it the picture looks too cold and they should refine it in Photoshop and make it look warm
Connection:
This picture inspires me a lot, I really want to go out and try take to take a picture like this but I am not sure how easy it will be But i will try my best and go out with an tripod and set my camera up and take a bunch of pictures and see witch one fits the best and I can always go on Photoshop and refine my ideas to make it look a bit more foggy and misty. In my project I am going to try take an picture like this and if it doesn't turn out how i want it I will refine my ideas in Photoshop and make it look like it
